Abstract
Traffic represents one of the largest sources of primary air pollutants in urban areas. Several recent studies suggest an association between automobiles exhaust and increased respiratory symptoms and diminished pulmonary function. In this study, we measured the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations at different distances from the roadside, and indoor and outdoor NO2 concentrations in 1st floor without NO2 source and 2nd floor with NO2 source of mufti-family house were simultaneously measured. Indoors to outdoors ratio (I/O) of NO2 concentration ratio with indoor source such as gas range was 1.56¡¾1.01, comparing with 0.79¡¾0.62 without indoor source. This result suggests that the contribution of traffic to indoor NO2 concentration be about 80%. Correlation coefficients (Spearman r) between indoor and outdoor NO2 concentrations with and without indoor source were 0.27 and 0.88, respectively. Measured NO2 concentrations on weekday were higher than those on weekend, and wind velocity decreased the NO2 concentrations in accordance with distances from roadside. Estimated NO2 source strength with indoor source using mass balance model ranged from 20.58-25.89 ppm/hr, assuming air exchange per hour of 1-1.5¢¥ and NO2 decay rate of 0.94 hr¢¥.
